A footballer strong on the fundamentals, Ronaldinho (little Ronaldo) is as capable of intricate footwork and feats of ball control as he is of devastating long shots his opponents cannot predict or stop. A tall, good-natured player with distinctive hair, Ronaldinho has become a fan favorite as much for his persona as for his impressive performance on the field. The latest in a long line of contenders for the world’s best football player to come out of Brazil, he is following in the footsteps of the many great Brazilian players who have chosen to go by only their first name. Of course, his exciting plays create little chance for confusion—except perhaps with another Brazilian great, Ronaldo. While he and David Beckham go toe for toe in terms of public recognition, Ronaldinho, despite having been embroiled in his share of scandals, has managed to avoid the vilification visited on Beckham. His unassuming manner and candor have helped him hold onto his fans’ affection despite having let down his teammates from time to time through excessive partying and extra long vacations home to his native Brazil. |
Ronaldinho started his professional career at Gremio before moving to the French team Paris SG. It was there that his nightclubbing began to hit the front pages of tabloids. Eager to put football first, Ronaldinho moved yet again, after only two years, to land at FC Barcelona. He claims the move was the best thing he could have done for himself—and the Barcelona fans are happy he sees it that way. Currently signed with the Barcelona club until 2010, fans can expect to see more of his talents in the years to come are looking forward to his World Cup play in that same year. He and Brazil took the Cup in 2002, and were put of the running in 2006. Known for a competitive streak and occasional temper, the young midfielder’s (Ronaldinho was born March 21, 1980) tendency to foul may be his greatest weakness. But as he matures and his skills develop, many followers of football predict he will cement his place among the very best. |
